The French EPR IDU Number Explained: Everything Foreign Companies Need to Know

5 min read · By AuditREP

What is an IDU and why does it matter

The IDU (Identifiant Unique) is France's unique registration number for EPR-obligated producers. It is issued by ADEME (the French environmental agency) through the SYDEREP register and confirms that a company is registered with an approved eco-organisation for a specific EPR category.

Each EPR category generates a separate IDU. A company registered for packaging (Citeo), WEEE (Ecosystem), and batteries (Ecosystem) will have three different IDU numbers. The format is typically FR followed by a series of digits.

The IDU serves three critical functions. Regulatory proof: it demonstrates compliance with French EPR law to authorities during inspections. Marketplace access: Amazon.fr, ManoMano, Cdiscount, and other platforms require valid IDU numbers and verify them against the ADEME database. Commercial credibility: business partners, distributors, and procurement departments increasingly request IDU numbers as proof of regulatory compliance.

How IDU numbers are issued

You do not apply for an IDU directly with ADEME. The process works through eco-organisations. Step 1: you or your mandataire registers with an eco-organisation such as Citeo or Ecosystem. Step 2: the eco-organisation validates your registration and transmits your data to ADEME. Step 3: ADEME processes the registration and issues the IDU through the SYDEREP system. Step 4: the IDU appears in the public SYDEREP database at filieres-rep.ademe.fr.

Typical processing time: 5 to 14 business days depending on the eco-organisation and period. January to March is peak season with longer delays.

Where to verify and display your IDU

The ADEME public database at filieres-rep.ademe.fr allows anyone to search for a company's IDU numbers by SIREN number or company name. Marketplaces use this database for verification. Your competitors and business partners can also check your compliance status.

Your IDU numbers should appear in your general terms and conditions of sale, your Amazon Seller Central EPR compliance section, your ManoMano seller profile, all other French marketplace accounts, and any commercial proposals or supplier qualification documents.

Can an IDU expire or be revoked

An IDU remains valid as long as your eco-organisation membership is active and your eco-contributions are paid. If you fail to pay eco-contributions, the eco-organisation can terminate your contract and notify ADEME. The IDU is then invalidated in SYDEREP.

Marketplace verification systems detect invalidated IDU numbers during their periodic checks, typically every few months. An IDU that was valid at registration but has since been revoked due to non-payment will trigger a new suspension process.

If you change eco-organisations (switching from Citeo to Léko, or from Ecosystem to Ecologic), a new IDU is issued for the new registration. The old IDU is invalidated. You must update all marketplace accounts and commercial documents with the new number.

Common IDU issues and how to resolve them

IDU rejected by Amazon: check the format (spaces, prefix). Copy-paste from your eco-organisation confirmation email rather than typing manually. If the format is correct, the IDU may not yet be transmitted to ADEME. Contact your eco-organisation to verify transmission status.

IDU not found in SYDEREP: there is a delay of 1 to 4 weeks between eco-organisation registration and SYDEREP database update. Provide your marketplace with the eco-organisation membership confirmation as temporary proof while waiting for the IDU to appear.

Multiple IDU numbers needed: if you sell in different EPR categories, you need one IDU per category. Amazon checks by product category and will flag missing IDU numbers category by category.

How we manage IDU for foreign companies

We obtain all your IDU numbers through a single coordinated registration process, verify their presence in the SYDEREP database, enter them in all your marketplace accounts, and monitor their ongoing validity. If you need to change eco-organisations, we manage the transition to ensure zero gap in coverage. Contact us for help with your French IDU numbers.

IDU for companies selling through distributors

If you sell products to a French distributor who resells under their own brand (private label or MDD), the distributor is the EPR-liable producer, not you. But if the products are sold under your brand by the distributor, you remain the producer and need your own IDU.

For mixed situations where some products are private-label and others are branded, the obligations are split accordingly. Your mandataire should analyse your distribution agreements to determine the correct allocation of EPR responsibility.

The SYDEREP public database as a commercial tool

The ADEME SYDEREP database at filieres-rep.ademe.fr is publicly searchable. Your competitors can verify your compliance. Your potential business partners and procurement departments increasingly check this database before engaging suppliers. Having up-to-date IDU numbers in SYDEREP is not just regulatory compliance but commercial credibility. Contact us to ensure your SYDEREP profile is complete and current.

IDU verification by marketplaces: how it works technically

Amazon.fr runs automated IDU verification against the ADEME SYDEREP database. The verification checks whether the IDU number exists, whether it is associated with the correct company (matching by SIREN or foreign registration number), whether the IDU is active (not expired or revoked), and whether the IDU covers the correct EPR category for the products being sold.

This verification runs at initial seller registration and periodically thereafter (typically every 3 to 6 months). A previously valid IDU that has been revoked due to eco-contribution non-payment will be flagged at the next periodic check, triggering a new suspension process. This is why ongoing mandataire management (including timely eco-contribution payments) is essential for sustained marketplace access.

The SYDEREP database as competitive intelligence

The public SYDEREP database at filieres-rep.ademe.fr is a powerful competitive intelligence tool. You can verify whether your competitors are EPR-compliant. You can check whether a potential supplier or distributor is registered. Procurement departments at major French retailers and distributors increasingly search SYDEREP before engaging new suppliers.

Conversely, your absence from SYDEREP is visible to competitors, who can report you to authorities. Several enforcement actions in 2024 and 2025 were triggered by competitor complaints based on SYDEREP searches.

Building your EPR profile as a commercial asset

In France, EPR compliance is no longer just regulatory hygiene. It is becoming a commercial qualification. Government procurement contracts increasingly require EPR compliance documentation. Large retailers include EPR status in supplier scorecards. B2B customers request IDU numbers during due diligence.

Our mandataire service ensures your SYDEREP profile is complete, up-to-date, and covers all applicable categories. We provide compliance certificates and IDU documentation formatted for procurement and due diligence processes. Contact us to build your French EPR compliance profile.
